Every piece has its own story: from quirky everyday pendants to extravagant engagement rings, we asked our clients to tell us about their personal journey from sketch to finish.
Val & Devon
How did you meet?
We knew of each other back in undergrad at the University of Texas (hook em!) but didn't know each other. It wasn't until years after college that our mutual friend thought we would be a good fit. I do not know how exactly he knew we would work but he swore we had a lot in common. After several failed attempts to set a meet and greet, we finally met at our friend's birthday party. The introduction, according to Devon, was not welcoming and we didn't ride off in to the sunset... that day. Fast forward to a couple of weeks later, I get an email from our mutual friend addressed to both Devon and me. The email outlined my bio and best characteristics to Devon, and in the following paragraph, outlined Devon's bio and best characteristics. I still have that email, lol! Funny enough, I never heard from Devon after this email and was prepared to write the whole thing off. It just happened that we had another mutual friend who hosted another party for their wedding, and Devon and I were both encouraged to attend. It was at this party where our journey began. Devon and I talked and laughed that whole night, had an official first date the following week, and haven't slowed down since.
Can you share your proposal story?
We got engaged in Marrakech, Morocco in January 2018 at the beautiful and luxurious La Mamounia Hotel. The morning of the proposal, Devon got up and told me to get dressed so we could take photographs around the hotel grounds to document our trip; translation: take pictures of me :-) I had no reason to suspect or question why he wanted me to do my make up nicely or make suggestions about what I should wear that day. He never comments on things like this except to rush me to hurry and finish because we're late...and we're always late because of me. Even though we were in an exotic and cultural destination (perfect for a life changing romantic experience), I was not expecting or anticipating a proposal on this trip. Honestly. Plus, I figured I would know when it was going to happen because Devon is notorious for being clumsy and/or nervous when he's up to something (lol!) so I figured I would get hints when it was going to happen! But none of that happened on this trip. Not even when he randomly pointed out "Hmm, you didn't get a manicure before this trip babe." *side eye* After picking out one of the kaftans I purchased for the trip and getting dressed, we made our way to the lobby to scope out where we were going to set up and take pics. He left me to ask hotel security to unlock the doors to one of the secured courtyards; this courtyard has been photographed many times and I remembered it vividly from one of the travel accounts I follow on Instagram (see the amazing picture in the photo gallery below!). It STILL did not click to me what was about to happen. I just remember thinking "these shots are going to be dizzope!"
We made our way to the courtyard for what I believed was about to be a solo photoshoot, for me :-) But as soon as we got out there, Devon gave his camera to the security guy to take pictures... of us! Devon positions himself next to me all happy and smiling. Meanwhile I'm thinking ok this is cute and all but we were supposed to be getting pictures, of me! After about 10 different shots and me smiling through my impatience after the last snap, I look over and Devon is bending down to one knee, and I immediately belted out "oh my gawd babe!" He beautifully reminded me of our journey together and how much we've grown, and how happy he is with our life together and looked forward to our days ahead. It was the sweetest and most endearing way to propose, and simultaneously humbled me because I certainly was high-key aggravated just seconds before that he was eating in to my solo photoshoot time and I'm trying to get my angles (lol). I never got my solo photoshoot in the courtyard but I did get a life partner. We can always go back :-)
Were you involved in the design, or was it a surprise?
I was surprised!
